President Jonathan Promises to make Borno State a Home of Peace Again
President Goodluck Jonathan and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria has assured Borno State residents that his administration would continue to work towards ending terror attacks in the north-east and reinstating peace in the state.
The state, referred to as ‘Home of Peace and Hospitality’, has become volatile, as members of a terrorist group, the Boko Haram, have made efforts to establish an Islamic State and end western education in the north-east region.
At a presidential campaign rally in Maiduguri on Saturday, organised to seek the peoples support in a re-election bid, President Jonathan said the Military would defeat the dreaded terror group.
Before he began his speech, he ordered the observation of a minute silence in memory of those killed by the dreaded sect members.
President Jonathan expressed regrets over the persistent rain of terror on the peace loving people of Borno State by the Boko Haram sect, saying his administration will surely overcome the reign of terror in the north-east.
“We will surely defeat the terror group, the Boko Haram, so that our peace loving people of the north-east and other troubled states can go about their legitimate business without any molestation.
“We will return Borno to its initial slogan, ‘the Home of Peace and Hospitality’, which has been tampered with by the sect group,” the president said, as he sought the peoples support in an election scheduled to hold on February 14, .
He, however, called for support for security agents, as they do their best to end the acts of terror in the region.
There have been several attacks on communities in the north-east, one of which ended in the the abduction of some 200 school girls from a government girls secondary school in Chibok in April 2014.
On the over 200 girls abducted by the members of the terrorist group, the President also said that his administration had continued to work towards the release of the innocent girls.
“We are working towards releasing the girls so that they will be reunited with their families after being in the hands of the terror group for such a long period,” president Jonathan said.
The Governor of the state, Mr Kashim Shettima, also expressed sadness over the destruction to human lives and property of the people by the terror group, also reassuring the people that his administration will soon defeat the group so that the peace loving people of the troubled states will go about their normal business.
‘Hold Me Responsible’
A former governor of the state and the senatorial candidate of the PDP in Borno Central, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, assured the President that the people of Borno were fed up with the current APC government and were ready to effect change in the forthcoming election.
He promised to deliver Borno State to the PDP, saying that the APC will not get more than 20 per cent in the forthcoming election.
“Under a free and fair election, Mr president, I assure you that I will deliver Borno State to the People’s Democratic Party.
“Hold me responsible if I don’t deliver Borno to the PDP in the forthcoming general elections,” Senator Sherrif said.
The Minister of State for Power, Mr Mohammed Wakil, called on the people of Borno State to vote massively for the PDP, emphasising that President Jonathan’s administration had done well in the power sector.
He listed the achievements of the administration to include reconnection of Borno to the national grid after power equipment were vandalised by the insurgents and the connection of over 100 towns and villages to the national grid among others.
The occasion drew party supporters across the state and beyond with high security presence across the venue and in the town in view of the unpredictable nature of insecurity bedevilling Borno State.
