The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has reversed its decision to down tools following what it described as a “fruitful” discussions with the Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, and the House of Representatives Committee on Education.

The union had a two-hour meeting with Mr. Shekarau and another meeting with the education committee of the House of Reps.

The National Publicity secretary of ASUP, Clement Chirman, told reporters that the union’s negotiation team will relay the outcome of the meetings to the ASUP’s National Executive Council.

While calling on union members to continue to perform their lawful duties, he said the union and government will continue to dialogue in resolving all outstanding issues.

ASUP had been protesting a circular issued by the Ministry of Education, suspending the implementation of CONTISS 15 in polytechnics, and the decisions by the governing councils of Federal polytechnics Oko in Anambra State and Ado, in Ado- Ekiti, to suspend all union activities in the institutions and the sack of union leaders.

Mr. Chirman said the Minister of Education has ordered the immediate withdrawal of the circular suspending CONTISS 15 and the restoration of union activities in the affected institutions.

Mr. Chirman also said Mr. Shekarau also assured that the ministry will look into all other demands, which border on increased funding for polytechnics and improved staff welfare.

Mr. Chirman added that the lawmakers have agreed to expedite action on other demands of the lecturers which also include the passing into law a bill establishing a National Polytechnic Commission.

Read the press statement from the Ekiti state governor's office below...
Ekiti State governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has described the exit of the former President of Nigeria, General Olusegun Obasanjo from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a good omen to the party, saying; "Obasanjo's exit is good riddance to bad rubbish. His departure is inglorious, we will never miss him.
Governor Fayose, who said Obasanjo's tearing of his PDP membership card was a vindication of his stand that the former president should have been shown a red card by the PDP a long time ago, noted that; "Now the PDP can sleep with two eyes closed because the lion among our brethren, the tormentor of Nigeria just departed from our party to join the All Progressives Congress (APC)."

The governor, who reacted to Obasanjo's tearing of his PDP membership card through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, said the former president was "a man without honour" who has been the major problem of the PDP and that "tearing his membership card was to save
him from imminent expulsion."

"Obasanjo shouldn't just tear his PDP membership card; he should relinquish the ownership of Bell University, Obasanjo Farms, Obasanjo Presidential Library, and other financial benefits he got during his eight years as president," Fayose said.

Speaking further, Fayose said; "Obasanjo's formal exit from the PDP at this time will further enhance the chance of the party in the presidential election because Nigerians will now see that eight out of
the 16 years that the APC claimed was a waste was spent by the party because Obasanjo and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who ruled Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 are now members of APC.

"If there is anything negative about PDP, Obasanjo contributed 50 percent. His eight years tenure is part of the 16 years that the APC people claim is a waste. And now that Obasanjo and Atiku are members of APC, it can be said that APC ruled Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 and the party should be ready to accept the liabilities of Obasanjo and Atiku's government.

"Therefore, Obasanjo's exit from the PDP is a confirmation that there is victory ahead for our party and mark my words, President Jonathan will be re-elected, Nigeria will have a clean departure from its sordid past, which Obasanjo and Buhari represent and take a giant leap into a promising future."

The Nigerian military just released a statement on its Facebook page blasting former president and retired General Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent remarks alleging that president Jonathan wants to use the military/Service Chiefs to extend his tenure. Find the Defense press statement below...
The Defence Headquarters has noted the remarks of a former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as reported in the media stating his views on perceived state of the armed forces and the roles being allegedly played by the military in the nation's political process in recent times. The leadership and cross section of the military believes that the former President and retired General has every right to be interested in the actions and fate of the military. Hence, his views like many others will continue to be accorded the well-deserved attention. It is however noteworthy that most of his utterances lately indicate an attitude of playing to the gallery or indulging in politicization of serious national security or military affairs.

For instance, the comments credited to Chief Obasanjo alleging that the postponement of the General Elections was to enable President Jonathan to use the Service Chiefs to plot a tenure extension is to say the least, very surprising. It is surprising indeed, considering the fact that the retired General chose to ignore the clarification and emphatic assurances of non-partisanship of the military as declared in a DHQ statement on the position of the Armed Forces in the ongoing political activities. His motive as usual remains unknown but it is certainly less than noble or well intentioned. We dare say again that Chief Obasanjo's assertions are false.
Much as the military desires to respect the old General and his views, it has become necessary to point out that his conduct and unguarded utterances of late has fallen short of the standard of discipline expected of an individual who has had the privilege of service in the military and risen to the status of a General. The behavior of retired General (Chief) Obasanjo has been so unbecoming and continues to constitute a serious embarrassment to the military before all who have reasonably and rightly adjudged the essence of military background in terms of the high value and standard it tends to contribute to statesmanship.
We feel constrained to remind the old General that the world has moved beyond that parochial and self-adulating reasoning and mindset which he seems stuck to. Indeed, he needs to be told that by virtue of their better training, exposure, education, assessment and environment, the military personnel of today are already far beyond his level in their appreciation of democracy and it's indispensability for the stable and prosperous society which Nigerians cherish.
In this instance, the military wishes to inform the retired General, that the institution which he bequeathed to the nation has .certainly developed beyond how he left it. The Nigerian military is now better placed to strive for the maintenance of the legacies & ethos of service, valour, subordination to constituted authorities, and nonpartisan commitment to duty and fatherland. It has to be restated that the military as an institution, is neither as inept in the discharge of its duties, nor is it being misused for political ends in the manner the retired General Obasanjo who was also a former President has possibly been made to believe.

Indeed, the system now strongly believes in Democracy as well as its structures and institutions to the extent that It will do nothing whatsoever to undermine or truncate the steady growth and development of the nation's democracy. The military will remain professional as it keeps doing its best along with others to ensure adequate security and defence of the nation's territorial integrity in this auspicious period in the country.

The Defence Headquarters will like to encourage Chief Obasanjo to be genuinely interested in the growth & sustenance of Nigeria's democratic credentials. He is also enjoined to endeavor to improve in his understanding of intricate issues and try to encourage the military rather than continue with this tendency to indulge in imputation of ulterior motives to every effort, all for the purpose of discrediting well thought out policies or decisions related to the military's roles in the polity. The support of all well-meaning elderly Nigerians remains vital in the onerous duty of working for the stability, defence, and peace of our country under duly constituted authorities in a democratic environment.

Founder and Spiritual leader of Inri Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele says notable religious leaders, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, Pastor E.A.Adeboye and Bishop David Oyedepo are disgracing God with their actions by hobnobbing with people in power and not having the courage to tell them the truth. The clergyman said this in an interview with Yes! Magazine
"Oyedepo, Oritsejafor and Adeboye have disappointed God. They see the truth but they are not saying it. I will be frank. These frontline pastors; Adeboye, Oyedepo, name them, PFN, CAN have they not disappointed the Nigerian masses now? Jonathan goes to Adeboye, what's the other man's name? Politicians have corrupted all church leaders. They are not saying the truth. Adeboye, Oyedepo and other big pastors are not saying the truth. We know that the economy is bad, things are not going right but they should have the courage to face them. For the first time let us be bold enough to tell them "What you are doing is bad". Tell them, "change from bad to good".
"They say Lagos is moving. What is moving in Lagos? Lagos is just there. Nothing is moving in Lagos. Both APC and PDP have destroyed this country. Pastors who are to talk are part of the corrupt system. Bishops, Primates, Prophets. Everybody is going to answer before God. I am not here to judge any Pastor but I am standing on the altar of truth" he said

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has reportedly dumped PDP and allegedly tore his PDP membership card in public. Punch, TVC and other media outlets are reporting this but details are still sketchy. This is coming after many verbal and written attacks between himself and the presidency in recent times. Details later...

During his Sunday sermon yesterday Sunday February 15th, House on the Rock head pastor Paul Adefarasin criticized men of God who join in political campaigns, saying they are not wise. He said politicians this year are very desperate and are promoting violence and men of God shouldn't be endorsing such people.

Pastor Adefarasin said he's non partisan, doesn't support PDP or APC but has his own preference which he didn't divulge. He then announced his own initiative called UPIN, United for Peace in Nigeria - to promote peace instead of violence in Nigeria.

Egypt has launched air strikes on ISIS hours after the terror group released a video showing the beheading of 21 Coptic Christians in Libya. The very graphic and disturbing video was released last night and it showed the terrorists, all dressed in head to toe in black, marching the captives, all wearing orange jumpsuits, to a beach where they were all beheaded by each militant standing behind them.

The men were killed just because they were Christians. Egyptian warplanes this morning attacked ISIS targets in Libya. A spokesman for the Egyptian Armed Forces announced the strikes on state radio, saying it was in retribution for the slaughter of the Christians. See the pics after the cut...

The spokesperson of the PDP Presidential Campaign organization, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has reacted to the recent attack by former President Olusegun Obasanjo on President Jonathan. At a press conference held yesterdayFebruary 15th in Abuja, Mr Fani-Kayode accused the former President of being angry at President Jonathan because he, Jonathan, refused to be teleguided by Obasanjo since he resumed as President in 2011. He described the allegations made by Chief Obasanjo as serious and grave. Full text of what he said at the press conference after the cut...

President Olusegun Obasanjo's allegations are serious and grave. They are also reckless. He has raised issues and made assertions that are capable of derailing our democracy and creating chaos in the land. It is vital that we consider his motives for this latest outburst and his credentials as a leader and an elder statesman.

The truth is that he knows that President Goodluck Jonathan will win next month's presidential election and that is why he wants to destroy the credibility of the whole process right from the outset. What he is trying to say in his latest contribution is that if President Jonathan wins, then the election must have been rigged right from the outset. This is not only wrong but it is also unfair and uncharitable. If President Obasanjo has any evidence to prove his weighty allegations he ought to present it before the Council of State and take it up there.

He should also report to INEC itself and present the data of whatever sinister plan he believes that President Jonathan has to stay in power ''by hook or by crook'' to them. He should tell INEC whatever it is that Jonathan is doing in order for him to stay in power by all means and he should give them all the details. That should be the starting point.
The record shows that this is not the first time that INEC have postponed elections. In 2011 during the National Assembly elections INEC not only cancelled the elections just after they started but they also postponed them by two weeks. The heavens did not fall then and neither did President Obasanjo accuse INEC or the President of having any grand plan to stay in power by hook or by crook at that time. One wonders what has suddenly changed.
What INEC has done by postponing the elections is firmly within the confines of the law and they have probably saved thousands of lives by doing so. They have also given the 34 per cent of Nigerians that had not collected their PVC's as at the relevant time the opportunity to do so. Without this postponement all those people would have been disenfranchised and it would have placed a dark cloud over the whole process. Why should President Obasanjo have a problem with that?
President Jonathan has re-affirmed his commitment to the democratic process over and over again and he has also said that the handover date of May 29th is sacrosanct. In view of these assurances, one wonders why President Obasanjo is creating such a hue and cry over nothing. What is he seeing that no one else can see? One wonders what his motives are? Does he have to rule every government by proxy? Must every leader take instructions from him? Is it a case of ''if I cannot control you and tell you what to do then you must go?''
President Obasanjo spoke about President Laurent Gbagbo and he claimed that President Jonathan was attempting to do a Gbagbo in Nigeria. The question that must be put to him is this: ''who got Gbagbo out?'' Was it not Jonathan's government that played a key role in ensuring that democracy was fully established in the Ivory Coast and did he not play a key role in ensuring that the Gbagbo plan ''stay in power forever plan'' did not work? If anyone doubts this they should ask President Alhassan Outtara of La Cote D'Ivoire the role that Jonathan and Nigeria played in helping to restore democracy and stability back to his country.
They should also find out the role that President Obasanjo played in attempting to keep President Laurent Gbagbo in power at all costs and the deep friendship that exists between the two men. It is a matter of fact and public record that when he was President of Nigeria, President Obasanjo, perhaps more than any other African Head of State with the exception of President Jacob Zuma of South Africa, propped up and supported President Gbagbo and it is an irony of fate and history that he is now condemning the actions of his old friend and accusing others of trying to emulate them.
Again it is ironic that President Obasanjo has accused President Jonathan of having a grand plan to stay in power at all costs and by all means yet it is the same Obasanjo that tried to stay in power for a third term even though the Nigerian constitution specifically forbade it. He tried all he could to change the constitution but the whole thing failed and he was compelled to leave power.
After Jonathan came to power, Obasanjo not only tried to control and teleguide him but he also asked him to do a number of things that were simply wrong and unacceptable. It is for President Goodluck Jonathan himself to divulge those things and I am sure that he will do so at the appropriate time. Needless to say President Jonathan refused to be teleguided and told what to do even though at all times he showed Obasanjo maximum respect and accorded him all the privileges, access and courtesies that is due to a former Head of State and a father and mentor. This continued to be the case even after Obasanjo consistently attempted to undermine his government and ridicule his efforts.
Yet President Obasanjo could not be appeased and was not satisfied. As far as he was concerned, he must either control Jonathan or Jonathan had to go. That is why he decided to secretly support the APC and became their ''navigator in chief''. He was determined to pull the whole house down rather than allow Jonathan to return to power. This is simply because he believes that if he cannot control someone that person must be destroyed. Control and domination is an obsession for Obasanjo. That is the bottom line. He is prepared to put even the devil in power provided he can control him. That is why he is so determined to stop Jonathan and put in place an Interim Government which he, or one of his surrogates, will head. That is his plan and he is determined to achieve it no matter what it takes.
Obasanjo does not want genuine democracy. He only pretends to want it. What he wants is control and a stooge in power. It does not matter what type of government it is as long as he controls it and it is headed by his puppet. It can be a military government, a civilian one, a democratic one, an interim government or a government of National Unity. To Obasanjo it does not matter as long as he can control it. That is his objective. That is why he hates Jonathan so much and that is why he wishes to stop him at all costs.
The bottom line is this: President Obasanjo's grouse with President Jonathan is personal and it has nothing to do with Nigeria. He should leave Nigeria out of it and let us all be. If he has a personal score to settle with Jonathan he should not do so at the expense of the peace and stability of Nigeria. If he wants to stop Jonathan then let him attempt to do so through the democratic process and through the ballot box and not through foul and unconstitutional means. We said it before and we will say it again: gone are the days that any President can be teleguided and controlled because we have all come of age.
We continue to hold President Obasanjo in high esteem but his recent actions and utterances are beyond the pale. He has been unfair to Jonathan, to Nigeria and even to himself. Most importantly the days of intimidating others with his harsh words and overbearing influence are long over. Obasanjo is not God. Only God is God and He alone determines the fortunes of men and the destiny of nations.
We sincerely hope that President Obasanjo appreciates the gravity of what he is attempting to do and we shall continue to pray that God will guide him and deliver him from whatever it is that makes him want to destroy all those that love him the most. Whether he likes it or not democracy has come to stay in Nigeria and the will of the Nigerian people will be done in next month’s presidential elections and thereafter. We believe that is God's plan and not even one million Obasanjo's can stop it.
God bless Nigeria.

Press statement from the office of the Ekiti state government below...
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the number one enemy of Nigeria, saying; "he is a confusionist who has lost his status as a statesman and Nigerians should simply ignore him."
The governor,  who expressed confidence that President Goodluck Jonathan will be reelected to complete his eight years term, added that; "Obasanjo is only fighting President Jonathan because he prevented him (Obasanjo) from ruling Nigeria from his Ota Farm."

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said "Obasanjo is a cancer that may never get cured in a lifetime.

"The moment Obasanjo is not the one controlling a house, he will want the house pulled down but this time around, he has failed."

The governor said; "Obasanjo has always benefitted from the misfortune of others and he is living with the impression that he is the wisest person in the whole world.

"When Murtala Mohammed was murdered in 1976, Obasanjo was the beneficiary.

"In 1993, he said the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, late Chief MKO Abiola was not the Messiah Nigeria needed. Instead of Obasanjo to join the clamour for the actualisation of Abiola's mandate, Obasanjo was canvassing for an Interim National Government, which he schemed to head.

"MKO Abiola died in detention in 1997 and Obasanjo became the beneficiary of his (Abiola) death.

"Despite the fact that it was the blood of MKO Abiola that Obasanjo matched on to power, not even a street was named after Abiola throughout Obasanjo’s eight years as president.

"Today, Obasanjo is fighting President Jonathan,  the man who has done what he failed to do for Abiola, the Yoruba people and Nigerians as a whole when he was president for eight years, simply because he does not want anyone to equal his record as Nigeria's longest serving president.

"President Jonathan has made it impossible for Obasanjo to run his presidency for him and for this reason, he is supporting Buhari, hoping that he will be the one to nominate ministers for Buhari if he becomes president.

"Abanije eniyan to nba eeyan je kiri, ojo to ba dekun ibaje ni won maa ba oun naa je kanle ( He who destroys will ultimately ends up in destruction).

"However, I have this bad news for Obasanjo. Nigeria is not his football that he can kick around as he likes. President Jonathan will be reelected, and Nigeria will be freed from his (Obasanjo) bondage once and for all."
